More children fear forced marriages

An increasing number of children ask for help because they fear forced marriages. The Red Cross Norway Help Line has received calls for help from children down to the age of fourteen.(Photo:Monica Berge of Red Cross Norway)
According to the Red Cross, 49 of the youngsters who have called since January last year were forced into marriages before the age of 18.
The summer vacation is the high season for forced marriages, since children are often accompanying their parents to the country of their birth for a holiday.
Many experience violence or threats on their life if they refuse to marry according to the wishes of the family, says Monica Berge of Red Cross Norway.
